Victoria Beja-Glasser

My name is Victoria Beja-Glasser and I am a third-year graduate student at the Broad and MIT in the Brain and Cognitive Sciences department. I work under Dr. Guoping Feng’s mentorship, studying the roles of ABCA7 and TREM2 in the normal brain, which are key proteins that increase the risk for Alzheimer’s disease when mutated. I joined NextGen a little over a year ago in hopes of learning how to navigate the Broad and to integrate into its community.

After attending almost every meeting and helping to plan the Trainee Town Hall and Broad Trainee Retreat this year, I have decided to run for a NextGen Association chair with the following goals in mind:

  1. Provide more career resources and networking opportunities for trainees;
  2. Provide outlets/events for managing stress;
  3. Recruit more graduate students and foster a more collaborative environment for current postdocs and graduate students at the Broad;

If elected as your NextGen chair, I am committed to advocating on your behalf to help make Broad an even better place!

Lisa Cervia

Hi fellow Broadies! I had the honor of serving as Co-Vice Chair of Nextgen this year. I am a member of the Cancer Program at the Broad and am dedicated to connecting trainees (PhDs and Postdocs) through Nextgen. We worked on planning a lot of exciting things this year including seasonal socials, the trainee talks lunch seminar series, the re-launch of the Facing Forward faculty lunches, AND the 2019 Trainee Retreat (mark your calendars for October 1st!). Since beginning my postdoc, I participated in multiple events hosted by NextGen. Among these great events and resources, the NextGen Retreat and the monthly meetings (with catered lunches!) have stood out as experiences that have made me feel welcome at the Broad AND provided me with a variety of settings to meet other Broadies! I sincerely enjoy working with peers to organize events that benefit us socially and in our professional development. I’d be honored to serve as part of the NextGen council and to represent trainees. I look forward to meeting you and hearing new ideas and suggestions that you might have that I could help implement through NextGen!

Naomi Li

Hello fellow Broadies! I am a postdoc in Bill Hahn’s lab and I am very excited to be running again for your NextGen Association Chair. Prior to joining the Broad Institute, I have served as the Vice President of my graduate school’s analogous association, where I contributed to organizing orientations, conferences and social activities for our students. If elected as the NextGen Association Chair, I hope to continue foster our awesome sense of community, and bring forth what I learned to contribute building more amazing programs for Broad trainees. I look forward to help trainees in exploring future career paths – whether it be in academia, industry, or even non-science related positions. I would promote the organization of more seminars and workshops that expand on the trainees’ professional skills, such as improving interview and presentation skills, as well as writing effective grants and preparing great CVs. Furthermore, I would encourage networking among peers and potential future collaborators through our fun social events, as well as organizing more mentor-mentee lunches with faculty and senior staff scientists to further provide learning and networking opportunities for trainees. Henceforth, I hope to have the chance to serve as your NextGen Chair for the 2019-2020 academic year and bring forth the best experience for us Broad trainees. Thank you!

Colles Price

My awesome trainees,

It has been amazing to serve you badass trainees on the NextGen Association and I hope if re-elected that we can make this next year the best one yet.  To do that I want to build on the successes of last couple of years. In March 2018, we had our first Trainee Retreat which was a roaring success and we followed that up with an even better Trainee Retreat in September 2019.  At these events we continue to highlight and bring trainees who have moved on to various careers including industry, academia, patent law, consulting and venture capitalism.  We created a seminar series with postdocs and graduate students here at the Broad Institute and provide an opportunity to present your science in a multidisciplinary group. We have co-sponsored several career building and social activities through our collaboration with the Boston Postdoctoral Association (BPDA).  Importantly, we have continued our domination in Boston/Cambridge-wide Postdoctoral trivia night bringing home 4 first place wins, 2 2nd place and 1 3rd place (out of 8-9 trivia nights)! Further, we are looking at expanding our socials and social events to potentially collaborate with other groups across the Broad and outside the Broad.

Importantly, we have launched initiatives to improve the trainee experience and build community here at the Broad.  We recently held the first trainee town hall in years and identified several areas where we need improvement and will spend the next two months compiling action items and ways to improve and present them to the executive leadership here at the Broad.  We also will be conducting surveys focused on mental health and ways to improve and support good trainee health. While we have these and many more initiatives planned for the next academic year I hope to build on our successes while addressing our weaknesses and failures.

Thank you for a great year on the NextGen Council and thank you for the opportunity to serve.

Elena Torlai Triglia

Hello Broad trainees!

I am Elena, postdoc in the Regev lab. When I joined the Broad in Sep 2018, I greatly enjoyed its interdisciplinary and multicultural community and I believe postdocs are a critical part of it. I would love to be an active part of NextGen and keep enhancing this sense of community between postdocs and other trainees. During my PhD in Berlin, I have organized events for grad students and the whole department, which contributed to create networks and collaborations through the institute. Last year, I was amongst the volunteers that helped organizing the Symposium on Careers and Collaboration in Science with the Boston Postdoctoral Association (BPDA).

As part of NextGen, I would look forward to representing the needs of our big international trainee community. I would organize networking and career development events within the Broad and across Boston, in collaboration with BPDA. Moreover, I would love to establish events in collaboration with the Broad communication team and the in-house artists on how to communicate effectively or how to improve data visualization, and to start a peer-to-peer feedback network on grant and fellowship applications. Finally, I look forward to hearing your suggestions on how to further improve NextGen!
